Introduction
The Ruger Blackhawk is a successful
modern version of the traditional single action revolver dating to the last
century. It offers a wide variety of calibers and uses, from plinking to
hunting. You will find its new Vaquero version very popular at Western
Shoots and re-enactments.
Since the early 1960’s. the
Blackhawk has been built on the Ruger XR-3 Red frame. This one piece
steel frame is also the basis for the Ruger Vaquero, the Single Six (.22) and
the Ruger Old Army black powder revolvers. The grips for all of these
revolvers are interchangeable since the revolvers use the same frame.
Because the grip frame is a solid
investment casting, the Blackhawk frame does not have the fitting problems of
the traditional Colt-style three piece single action frame. One fitting
note however: the frame pin is rolled, so the grip hole lip might
need chamfering with a knife. Press the panel on with your hands.
Do not use the screw to pull the panels together down onto the frame
--the grips screw will pull through the grip. After the panels are flat
on the frame, snug up the screws.

Standard Styles & Materials
We offer grips for the
Blackhawk (and the frame related revolvers) in both the revolver Classic
Panels and Oversize Finger Grooves. Altamont makes the Classic Panel
style in the three Super Woods, the Imitation White Pearl, and the Bonded
Ivory. We offer the Super Woods and the Bonded Ivory grips in
smooth or cut checkered. We also offer low profile checkering for
the Super Woods grips, only.
The Oversize Finger Grooves grip
provides the shooter a firmer feel and better control. The revolver does
not roll up in the hand with the recoil while this larger grips surface
absorbs more of the recoil. These features are important in big bore
hunting and target shooting.
Altamont
makes the Oversize Finger Grooves style grips in the three Super Woods and the
Bonded Ivory. We offer the Super Woods smooth or with Low Profile
Checkering.
Custom Materials & Services
Carvings
The Carvings show here
on the Ruger Vaquero are traditional single action designs that Altamont
adapted to the Blackhawk frame and cast in Bonded Ivory. Edges of our
Carvings are smoothed over for the grips to comfortable fit in the palm of the
hand and provide an impressive look while maintaining undisturbed ease of
shooting. Altamont Carvings, which raise from the surface of the grips,
can be stained with a dye to accentuate the design and achieve an antique
look. Typically, our Carvings are on the right hand panel for holster
use. These grips are attached with a grip screw from the smooth panel
which goes into a blind threaded insert on the inside of the carved panel.
Scrimshaw and Engraving
Altamont’s Scrimshaw really enhances the
look of a single action, particularly for a blued frame. The majority of
our design are placed on the right hand panel; however, upon request, we
can place the design on the left hand panel. All of the Engraving
designs are done on both panels.
Oval Inlays
The Oval Inlays for the Ruger
Vaquero can be placed in both the Classic Panel and the Oversize Finger
Grooves styles. Most of our Scrimshaw designs can be used on the Oval
Inlays. There are a few exceptions when a design cannot be used due to
the size.
