About Us

Altamont is a design and manufacturing company, in business since 1981. We make archery grips, knife handles, gun stocks, and of course pistol grips. We use high speed CNC machining centers, lasers, Zuckerman duplicators, and robotics to make our parts accurately and efficiently. We specialize in precision machining: we have over thirty CNC high speed maching centers in our plant. We start with the raw materials then machine, sand, finish, and checker the grips ourselves. We control the design, machining, and quality from beginning to end in our plant. We have learned through experience and technology to make a good grip.

We started small, twenty years ago, supplying specialty grips to the gun manufacturers. We made the genuine ivory grips for Colt's John Wayne series, as well as the Elmer Keith Commemorative for Smith. We later got into contract work making handles for such companies as Bear Archery, Buck Knives, Weatherby, Taurus, Kimber, Beretta, as well as Smith & Wesson and Colt.

We have expanded to a modern plant size of 42,000 feet, on three acres of land, located in Thomasboro, Illinois. We do work for companies in Korea, Japan, Italy, Germany, as well as the United States.

We enclose pictures of our plant as an introduction

Our latest Shoda is state-of-the-art and has multiple spindles, each having a tool changer on a 5' x 10' bed. The Shoda is used for grips and knife handles.

Our high-speed checkering machines have four axis, and have broad capabilities; handling both grips and long gun stocks.

We have multiple Fadal high speed vertical machining centers with tool changers. These provide flexibility for shorter runs than multihead Shodas. The Fadal machines are all equipped with vacuum tables and some have fourth axis rotary heads for stock inletting.

Our sanding and grinding machines, which are similar to Zuckerman, allow for high production of grips.

We have extensive finishing capabilities. We have four vibratory finishers, Sweco and Giant. We have two spray booths, using Kremlin Air Assists. And we have an extensive sanding room for buffering and sanding. We also have two Fanuc robots that are being integrated into our finishing capabilities.
